LOS ANGELES, CA - The
Learned Ladies is an hands down rhyming must see. Originally
written by Moliere in 1672, this contemporary adaptation by
Freyda Thomas makes its Los Angeles Premiere at the Theater of
Note, and not a moment too soon. Directed Larry Biederman, The
Learned Ladies is the hilarious intrafamilial farce where
Women’s Lib is examined with love being the classical
underlining theme wrapped in rhyme. This cleverly written script
introduce a group of educated ladies, who unfortunately find
themselves to be more ignorant than a gutsy maid or a daughter
who dreams of true love, while in their search for expanded
knowledge of enlightenment. Involving the audience in
their story whenever they can, the ensemble of this production
delight and impress. Elizabeth Liang and Phinneas
Kiyomura are perfectly matched as young lovers Henriette and
Clitandre. Patrick McGowan and Lynn Odell hold strong as
Chrysale and Philamente, whose marriage has reached a
crossroads. Millie Chow is amusing and likeable as the
Chrysale’s intellectual and spurned daughter. Chrysale’s
intelligent brother Ariste is faultlessly portrayed by Kiff
Scholl. Kirsten Vangsness’ priceless performance of
Chrysale’s mentally unbalanced sister Belise is a comedic
highlight. David Conner nails the role of egotistic poet Trissotin.
Rounding out the cast admirably are Lisa Clifton as the Martine
the maid, Brad Light as the hipster poet Vadius, and Frank
Astran as Ariste’s personal assistant. Finally to be noted is a
special nod to the colorful set design. The literature literally
hanging from the ceiling to the portraits along each wall added
perfectly to the atmosphere. The combination of a
fantastic script and talented cast are the reasons why you
should go see The Learned Ladies. The audience member
will be a guaranteed a wonderful time, while some may be
subliminally programmed to leave the theater speaking in rhyme.
